Flamanco Festival



Hey All,

Feliz año nuevo! The new year brings us to the North Central annual Flamenco Festival. This year we have fantastic movies, performances, dance classes, and lectures regarding Spanish history and culture. Come and join us in and around the North Central campus. Explore,loose yourself in the culture, the music, the dance, and the language...

The schedule is as follows...

LECTURE: “The Art of flamenco,” Tuesday, Feb. 1, 12:00-1:00 pm in Koten Chapel. Learn about the fascinating history and culture of flamenco. Spanish Instructor Jelena Sanchez will present an engaging visual presentation on the evolution of the artistic expression of the gypsies. Spanish tapas served afterwards.

FLAMENCO CLASSES: Every Monday, 12:00-2:00 pm in Heininger Auditorium,now through the month of February. Learn flamenco arm and body movements, footwork, clapping, fans and more. Bring shoes.

FLAMENCO MOVIES:

In Meiley-Swallow Hall: Thrust Theatre

Thursday, Feb. 3 at 12:00 pm, “The Flamenco Clan” (2004),

89 Min. A documentary on a legendary Gypsy family and the musical group “Ketama.” (English subtitles)

Wednesday, Feb. 9 at 3:00 pm, “Carmen” (1983), 97 Min.

The award-winning movie by Spanish director Carlos Saura tells the story of a flamenco teacher obsessed with his flamenco production of the classic opera and the beautiful dancer who plays the lead role of “Carmen.” (English subtitles)

Tuesday, Feb. 15 at 12:00 pm, “Gypsy Heart” (2000), 50 Min. A documentary about the Gypsy flamenco dancer Omayra Amaya searching for her own identity in the US far away from her home in Andalucía. (English)

FLAMENCO PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT:

The exhibit will show portraits of a new era of flamenco enthusiasts from North Central College. These photographs seek to inspire and engage our campus community in a cross-cultural discourse through eclectic expressions of flamenco. Photographs by Jelena Sanchez. FLAMENCO SHOWS!

Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana, one of the nation’s premier dance companies, performs at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 3, in North Central College’s Pfeiffer Hall, 310 E. Benton Ave., Naperville.
